Planting a Love for the Sea in Young Minds

Have you ever heard whales sing? This incredible soundscape inspired creative writer Selene Loaiza to create a project that transforms how children connect with nature. As a recipient of a grant from our Women In Sustainable Enterprise (WISE) program, Selene’s initiative merges art and science to enhance children’s understanding and appreciation of our natural marine world, seeking to foster environmental stewardship and inspiring the next generation of conservationists.
A Sea of Emotions
“Sounds of the Sea” is more than just a book; it’s an invitation to explore, dream, and care for our planet. This unique initiative combines vibrant illustrations, poetic texts, and access to real ocean sounds through a QR code printed on each page and linked to an internet sound source. Together these create a deeply immersive experience, transporting children to a magical world full of life, where they will discover fascinating animals and develop a deep bond with nature.
From the very first page, they embark on an underwater adventure—hearing the splash of penguins, the clicks of dolphins, the rush of sea lions, and the songs of whales—fostering a sense of belonging to the wonderful Galápagos Islands. So far, 800 of these “sound books” have been distributed in rural schools of the islands of Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, Isabela, and Floreana, prioritizing reading and fostering a sense of care and conservation.
A Lifelong Experience
The books were distributed along with reading mediation, a process that involves guided reading activities designed to engage imagination and stimulate learning in children. This initiative has been highly effective, sparking children’s interest in reading and increasing their knowledge regarding the biodiversity of the Galápagos. “By teaching children to care for their environment, we are forming environmental ambassadors who will influence their families and multiply sustainable practices,” states Jenny Macias, our educational advisor.
