Dr. Charles Knapp joined the Board in 2020. He is Vice President of Conservation Research at Shedd Aquarium and has been conducting research in the wider Caribbean for 25 years. Using iguanas as model organisms, his research focuses primarily on understanding the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on endangered taxa and designing conservation strategies to prevent further population declines and habitat degradation. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology (1991) from Southern Illinois University, and his Master of Science (1999) and Ph.D. (2005) in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Florida. He also was a Conservation Research Postdoctoral Fellow (2010) with the Institute for Conservation Research at the San Diego Zoo. He is co-chair of the IUCN Iguana Specialist Group, sits on the Board of Directors for the International Iguana Foundation, and is a science advisor to the Bahamas National Trust. He lives in Chicago, Illinois.
Bradley T. Johnson received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth and his MBA and JD from the University of Virginia. He has lived and worked extensively in Latin America and is an experienced international attorney now in private practice specializing in cross border transactions and new business development. Brad lives in Martinsville, Virginia.
A graduate of Dickinson College with an MS Ed from the University of Pennsylvania, Diane Hickman Liss made her first journey to the Galapagos as a teenager, accompanying her father, Dr. Cleveland Hickman, Jr. on a boat trip to the archipelago via the Panama Canal. Inspired by many visits and Cleve’s passionate example, Diane has become a keen advocate for the education of future generations of scientists dedicated to the research and protection of the Galapagos Islands. Diane lives with her husband, Frederic Liss MD, in Malvern, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Flanagan received his DVM from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1982. He is currently Senior Veterinarian at the Houston Zoo. He first visited Galapagos in 1993 and has frequently advised on animal health issues for many projects that advance conservation, habitat restoration, eradication of invasive species, and “re-wilding” of giant tortoises and land iguanas.
