Through Art and Culture, Galápagos Conservancy Promotes Preservation of the Islands

The first Cultural Festival Celebrating Galápagos Natural Heritage and Humanity will take place on Santa Cruz Island next Thursday, September 8, in Puerto Ayora, to commemorate 44 years since the islands’ declaration as a World Heritage Site. Bertha Corella, a cultural activist from the Galápagos Islands and a recipient of one of Galápagos Conservancy’s Conservation and Sustainability Action Grants, is in charge of organizing the festival which she hopes will strengthen the enchanted islands’ cultural identity and celebrate the preservation of its ecosystems.
Culture experts affirm that it is possible to promote environmental conservation and raise public awareness of threats to the planet through the arts. Bertha wants to encourage citizen participation in defense of the Archipelago’s biodiversity and social commitment to caring for this heritage through her initiative that promotes the care of the islands through art, in addition to highlighting the cultural identity of the Province of Galápagos.
“Culture contributes positively and effectively to the well-being of society,” Bertha emphasized. She believes that through art we can contribute to environmental sustainability and socio-economic development. Numerous regional artists, including painters, dancers, musicians, and singers, will participate in the festival and share their work with the community while raising awareness of the need to protect the Islands. To honor the anniversary of the designation of Galápagos as a Natural Heritage Site and to remind people that culture can encourage environmental stewardship, Bertha hopes that annually, on the 8th of September, a new Cultural Festival will be held in Galápagos.

En Galápagos se promueve el cuidado de las islas a través del arte y la cultura
La isla Santa Cruz será la sede del primer Festival Cultural celebrando a Galápagos como Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad, que se realizará el próximo jueves 8 de septiembre en Puerto Ayora, isla Santa Cruz al conmemorar 44 años de su declaratoria como Patrimonio.
El Festival es financiado por Galápagos Conservancy y liderado por Bertha Corella, activista cultural de Galápagos, que es beneficiaria de las Subvenciones para Acciones de Conservación y Sostenibilidad, quien a través de su emprendimiento quiere fortalecer la identidad cultural de las islas encantadas y fomentar la conservación de sus ecosistemas.
Expertos en cultura aseguran que a través del arte es posible concienciar de los peligros que acechan al planeta y promover su conservación. Por eso, a través de su emprendimiento, además de acentuar la identidad cultural de la Provincia de Galápagos, Bertha quiere potenciar la participación ciudadana en la defensa de la biodiversidad del Archipiélago e incentivar el compromiso social para cuidar este Patrimonio.
“La cultura contribuye positiva y eficazmente al bienestar de la sociedad”, subrayó Bertha. Considera que a través del arte se puede contribuir a la sostenibilidad medioambiental y al desarrollo socioeconómico. Numerosos artistas regionales, entre ellos pintores, bailarines, músicos y cantantes, participarán en el festival y compartirán su trabajo con la comunidad, al tiempo que concientizarán sobre la necesidad de proteger las islas. Para honrar el aniversario de la designación de Galápagos como Patrimonio Natural y para recordar que la cultura puede fomentar el cuidado del medio ambiente, Bertha espera que cada año, el 8 de septiembre, se celebre un nuevo Festival Cultural en Galápagos.
