The “Galápagos, My Responsibility” project, supported by Galápagos Conservancy through conservation grants, is establishing a new standard for environmental education among children and youth on Santa Cruz Island. Led by Alberto Andrade, an environmental activist and grant recipient, this initiative implements a variety of activities designed to educate and inspire the community to protect the invaluable ecosystem of the Galápagos. By encouraging active participation, the project cultivates deep and lasting environmental awareness, empowering the next generation to take leadership roles in conserving this extraordinary archipelago.
The project has conducted 21 radio broadcasts in collaboration with Radio Santa Cruz, reaching hundreds of listeners and addressing important conservation topics such as species protection and sustainable tourism. These broadcasts have created an accessible platform for dialogue, featuring insights from 44 local participants. The series has become a vital tool for promoting environmental responsibility, engaging a wide and enthusiastic audience eager to take action.
Our support has facilitated storytelling workshops for children and young adults, where participants developed their communication skills to express their ideas and emotions confidently. These workshops not only helped attendees overcome stage fright but also fostered a sense of environmental leadership, preparing the youth of Galápagos to take active roles in conservation efforts.
In addition, we hosted live-streamed discussions on social media that addressed essential topics such as conservation, science, and regenerative tourism. These conversations provided the community with a platform to explore solutions to current environmental challenges while reinforcing collective efforts to protect Galápagos’ unique biodiversity.
Thanks to the collaboration of community partners, the activities of “Galápagos, My Responsibility” will continue to expand. Ongoing radio programs and workshops will reach a wider audience, engaging more individuals in the shared mission of protecting the fragile ecosystems of Galápagos.
At Galápagos Conservancy, we take pride in supporting initiatives that prioritize environmental education and nurture youth leadership. Through our commitment to the community, we encourage active participation in conserving the natural heritage of the archipelago. Projects like “Galápagos, My Responsibility” not only ensure the protection of Galápagos’ biodiversity but also foster a lasting legacy of environmental responsibility and collective awareness for future generations.
