Galápagos Conservancy has just delivered advanced molecular genetics laboratory equipment to the Galápagos Biosecurity and Quarantine Agency (ABG). This new technology will increase the capacity for biosecurity agents to prevent entry of potential pest species into the archipelago as well as help reduce illegal trafficking of native species out of the islands.

The equipment purchase of DNA sequencing technology was enabled by a Galápagos Conservancy Board member through Goldman Sachs Gives. The gift and transfer of the equipment was made possible under an Inter-institutional Cooperation Agreement between the ABG and Galápagos Conservancy, facilitated by its operating arm in Ecuador, the Conservando Galápagos Foundation.

Galápagos Conservancy has also provided additional resources to ABG to enhance quarantine controls by automating the Sworn Declaration of Goods, a requirement for all visitors entering Galápagos. Currently, this process involves manual forms distributed on flights. Implementation of the new digital online system will reduce errors, increase efficiency, and eliminate paper usage.

ABG’s Executive Director, Jean Pierre Cadena, emphasized that the donation and ongoing collaboration between ABG and Galápagos Conservancy will enhance his agency’s diagnostic capacity. “The new equipment will streamline analysis times and enable immediate responses to new threats,” he noted.

Galápagos Conservancy’s Director General, Dr. Washington Tapia, underscored our organizations’ joint commitment to conservation of Galápagos, emphasizing the crucial role of close collaboration with environmental authorities and the local community. This shared responsibility ensures a sustainable future for the archipelago.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Galápagos demands constant vigilance and protection. Assisting ABG’s efforts is critical in mitigating threats facing this unique archipelago. With the steadfast support of our dedicated donors, we continue to support ABG in regulating and controlling the risk of introducing and spreading exotic species that could jeopardize biodiversity, the local economy, and health of residents and visitors.

We are thrilled to contribute to and support an institution tirelessly working towards the conservation of Galápagos’ unique ecosystems. We are deeply grateful to our donors, whose unwavering support is integral to our conservation efforts.
