At Galápagos Conservancy, we believe in the power of community to protect the unique ecosystems of the archipelago. In partnership with Silversea Cruises, we are empowering Ocean Scouts Group No. 17 members in Galápagos to become certified scuba divers. The initiative provides these young aquanauts with diving and underwater exploration skills, ultimately building a local team capable of conducting ocean conservation underwater projects.
Earning their scuba certification has been a significant milestone for the eleven young participants, who learned essential diving techniques under the guidance of certified experts. This training has enabled them to explore the extraordinary Galápagos Marine Reserve, home to unique species such as sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and marine iguanas.
Community interest in this project was strong in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on San Cristobal Island, where many families actively supported their children’s efforts. The scouts formed a lasting connection to the ocean through coordinated dives and underwater teamwork. Experiencing the marine world firsthand fosters a sense of responsibility for the Galápagos Marine Reserve, instilling a commitment that will span generations and ensure these young people become future guardians of the sea. As one participant, excited by their experience, noted: “I never imagined I’d see a shark up close. Now, I feel it’s my responsibility to protect them.”
Throughout the project, participants encountered challenges, particularly in balancing dive training time with school commitments. However, teamwork proved to be an essential tool for overcoming these obstacles. One scout distinguished himself as a motivating leader, inspiring his peers to pursue and complete the necessary certifications. This experience fostered camaraderie among the scouts and enhanced their confidence and problem-solving skills. Growing leadership abilities highlight the potential these young individuals have to inspire others. By taking on these responsibilities, they are preparing to become skilled divers and passionate advocates for the Galápagos Marine Reserve.
The impact of this project reaches beyond training skilled divers; it represents Galápagos Conservancy’s commitment to conserving the Galápagos Marine Reserve and promoting sustainability across the archipelago. By equipping young people with practical skills and knowledge about their marine environment, they become ambassadors for conserving the marine biodiversity unique to their home. We proudly support marine environmental education, and this initiative testifies to our dedication to involving the community in ocean protection.
This legacy enriches young people’s lives and benefits future generations by fostering a culture of care and respect for nature. As these youths continue their journey of learning and discovery, they embody hope for a future where marine conservation is entrusted to those who truly understand and value it. We are committed to building a community that actively engages in protecting the Galápagos Marine Reserve, ensuring its beauty and natural richness are preserved for years to come.
We invite you to join us in this conservation effort. By supporting initiatives like Ocean the Scouts dive training program, you empower the youth of Galápagos to help protect one of the planet’s most precious ecosystems. Together, we can ensure that the oceans of Galápagos remain a vibrant sanctuary for its many unique species, leaving an enduring legacy for future generations.
